A 1/48 scale Tamiya King Tiger is on order and it has 'link and length' tracks in it....what does that mean? I am a total armor noob.
I wanted to build a Tiger II so I could try and paint one of those cool looking Ambush schemes.

This generally consists of single "runs" of cast tracks for the top and bottom with individual cast links to go 'round the corners.

Sweet! I know you'll make it look great.

1/48 is great and all, but if you want the "real" experience go for 1/35!  Wink     Or 1/1.  Grin

Thanks for the reply Mike and Adam.

Adam,
I do have a 1/35 scale Panther kit in the stash but it has the rubber band style tracks in it and I have not been eager to build it because of those tracks. Those 1/48 scale Tamiya ground vehicles are loads of fun to build and are easy enough to put together even for a Luftwaffe freak like me. Smiley

Check out the tracks I work with in this review - I'm pretty sure you can get them for the Panther kit.

I think you'll find building armor is as addicting as building wingy things. I use to build alot more armor but recently I have been on a plane kick so my armor stash has been sitting idle. I last build the Tamiya 1/35 Panther G late. I used the Fruilmodel metal tracks. They are very expensive but in my opinion they are the best out there and the most realistic. Looking foward to seeing some pictures.

Thanks for the reply Phil, Swanny, and killsnapz.

Swanny,
Thanks for the info on those tracks, I am not sure if I want to try them since I only dabble in ground vehicles and armor but its nice to know there are other options.
Last year I built some of those 1/48 scale Tamiya ground vehicles and enjoyed every one of them. When I get fully burned out on Focke-Wulfs I might turn to some armor kits to keep my interest in model building alive.

Sounds nice. I prefer the link 'n' length tracks myself. Does anyone have advice about these "Dragon styrene" tracks, the allegedly-gluable rubber band tracks that came out from Dragon (and now Trumpeter) recently?

The Dragon "DS" tracks are very nice looking.
Some of the earlier releases had to have the center guides glued on, but the newer ones are one piece (in almost 3 years of banging on tank tracks I never once heard them called "Guide Horns", they're called Center Guides).
They are gluable , but I would paint them with acrylics rather than enamels.
I had the newer style Tamiya tracks on the T-72 deteriorate after I painted them with enamels.
Won't make that mistake again.
