Curtiss P-3A
03/02/10 at 01:05:53

Hello Fellow forum/Group Build members, as you can see I'm a new guy to Swanny's forum. Saw this GB and new I had to get on board.

My build will be the Pro Resin 1/72 F6C-3 'Hawk" which I will finish as one of the five P-3A's and one XP3A that served in the Army and was outwardly identical to the Navy F6C-3.

The F6C-3/P-3A's were the first of the air cooled radial engined Curtiss Hawks to see service. The Army's preference for in line water cooled engines was the main reason only a handful of P-3A were used.
One of the  5 built P-3A's and the XP-3A went to Wright Field. The remaining 4 were sent to Selfridge Mi, and served in the 1st Pursuit Group, most likely serving in the 94th Pursuit Squadron. Two  of those 4 later went on to serve in the 57th Service Squadron(....and here's the hook that got me.....) The remaining two aircraft were involved in a mid-air collision on Dec 11 1924, both pilots jumped and survived, One of them was a Lt. Wm. H. Doolittle!

I am a big fan of these 'Hawks' and the Boeing's that flew during the 20's and I'm sure this Pro Resin Kit wont be my last.

...
Box top that also served as a paint test sheet.

...
Not a whole lot of parts but the kit does have a resin and etched cockpit.

...
The main short coming of the kit was the engine (anemic and undersized) here replaced by one from the spares box

...
A shot of the nice detail on this resin kit, although I did replace the lacing on the entire fuselage with 'Part' etched stitching

So this is my entry in the Group Build (my first)..be gentle Smiley

Now that's how to make an introduction.  Nothing like pics to say here I am.  I don't know how you guys build small planes in a small scale but you seem to be doing quite well Smiley

Thanks for the welcome gents.

Its been an interesting build so far and not without its headaches.

The kit it self is a mixed bag of great and some not so great. I for one am amazed at the amount of petite detail these Pro Resin kits have. On the other hand there are some area's that need help.

On my build I replaced the upper and lower wings with ones from the Olimp P-6 plastic kit. The reason being the fabric depicted on the resin wings is crude. I also had to replace he engine, and this was the biggest headache of the build so far. The original kit  had 9 undersized cylinders that you just glue into the nose, they also had the wrong frontal profile of a P&W 1340. Finding a replacement was a pain until I opened a Monogran Boeing F4-B kit!

Would I build another one, Yes!

Did Pro Resin recently list the P-3A as a future release...Yes. oh well

Curtiss P-3A MOVING ALONG

OK. This may not be the most elegant answer to this problem but it works for me and its cheap, and simple to use .

My problem was with this, kit as with many other short run kits there are no locating pins, just flat area's to mount parts on to. In order to square things up I used graph paper pinned onto a foam board, added some control lines in red and mounted the major parts using toothpicks to hold everything square to the graph paper and control lines. dihedral was added by using the tips of the toothpicks placed under the wingtips, using the beveled points to control degrees of dihedral. Next step will be to add a 'touch' of super glue to leading and trailing edges for now. Struts next.

So far so good, all the smaller parts have been painted and I've worked out the Air Corps serial on my copy of Corel....

Cheers Gents...

That's an interesting way to get everything aligned.   Simple and effective.
