The French 75 MM Field Gun
02/02/10 at 04:36:29

Using the absolutely ancient Life-Like kit as the basis I have decided to frustrate the p*ss out of myself by converting it to a French 75.

In researching the gun I do not think that the kit is an accurate representation.  I have had hands on an actual one at the museum at the Ordnance Proving Grounds in Aberdeen MD.  The gun the kit is based upon is there but it is not a French 75.

This is the gun the kit is based upon...
...

This is the French 75
...

So my work starts with the barrel, the business end of the piece.  The end is two pieces of brass fitted inside each other then blended in with the kit parts...
...

The next step will be work on the breech "cheeks" as seen in this photo...

Cool subject Joe. On the green in my town there is a WWI memorial and on top of it is an original WWI french artillery piece. I have no idea what it is but its huge. Let me see if I can find a picture of it.

Wicked subject... I was always impressed by the French 75; its design allowed for a fairly rapid reload time. A good team could get under twenty rounds per minute on target. Here's a video of it in action.

Are you going to add some figures to it?

Figures would be tough, I have no idea what the base kit scale is...my skills are nowhere near this attempt let alone figures!

They best way to learn is to jump right in and have a go at it! Figures are hard to do for me also but they do'nt have to be award winning. Just use them to add some sense of scale to the gun.
