How to make this SIG "better"
01/25/10 at 17:08:47

When I asked that this SIG get started I was awash in the after glow of reading a tremendous book on the Somme.  The new Red Baron was being released and well I was swept up!

So, I continued my reading an exploration...and now instead of getting swept up I am getting immersed!

There are alot of stringbag types out there, open as well as closet and guys who have never given the biplane a try.  Not only the aeroplane but artillery, ships, figures and tanks...

The 100 year anniversary is coming, 4 years, but most of us are at that advanced stage of maturity to know 4 years flies by!

What can be done to make the Special Interest Group (SIG) "better"?

Free beer and ciagar of the month club memberships for contributors Smiley

Seriously-we just need more people to build. Perhaps a group build would help draw more interest?

Group Build....

Rob and I, when chatting, tossed this idea around...

Take a kit...say the Wingnut Se 5a...builders, perhaps 4 or even 5, chip in to cover the costs.

We each chose a sub assembly to build, once completes then ship it off to the lucky gent completing the build.  Al La, real aeroplane manufacturers with sub contractors.

When the build is complete it is then donated  to a historical society for display etc.  The key as Rob pointed out, is to make the shipping as easy as possible to prevent damage...

You know, I've thought about mentioning something like this before but couldn't work out how to make the shipping both safe and equitable to all involved.  It's a real cool idea IMHO but a logistical nightmare in the makings.

I think what we need in this SIG is recruitment.  There are only a few of us that build WWI kits and with the exception of MikeT we seem to do so sporadically and on the slow side.  I was hoping the influx of FSM guys(80 and growing) would have a WWI nut or two in the bunch.  After people see a well done kit of any kind they tend to want to do one themselves so the more builds we get posted I'm betting the more people become active here.

Building the Avia 534 has given me a real taste for biplanes and I'll definitely be doing some more so count me in as a recruit to this SIG.  Smiley Maybe as a thought to generate more interest you could slim it down to just aircraft? Not a huge amount of WW1 armour or ship kits to choose from so maybe if it was more focused on one area it would make it more accessible to a wider audience?  Undecided

Interesting point....but...there is always a but (butt) there are quite a few Great War subject out there other than aeroplanes.  Before the hacker attack I had begun to comile a list of kits etc.  I have to dig through my paper notes to find them.

With the "Buddies Building Ships" thread and figures popping up now and again would it really be a good Idea to limit it?  Granted they could always be posted in here anyway...

Joe I also think some strong recruiting in the other threads might pull some lurkers out. I know there are a lot of these WWI kits in people stash. I think what stops a lot of people is even in 1/48 scale a lot of these subjects are extremely time consuming and tedious so many that would like to build them are put off a bit. I ama slow builder and I spent 6 months on my Eduard 1/48 Fokker D VII and it has almost no rigging. The lozenge pattern decals and rib tapes took weeks of work alone. That being said if you could scare up enough people I would join you in a buddies building theme here in this SIG. As long as it had a long build time. I still have the second Fokker from my Dual Combo kit. Lets see if we can put something together.

I have a bunch of WW I stuff to build.  I have somewhat recovered from building the Eduard Siemens Schuckert D.IIIa.  Maybe I'll try one of my newer Eduard kits, the D.IIIa was one of their first.  Hard work.  We ought to be keeping open a home for WW I types.

I can tell you first hand it works. When my mates and me were hosting the Reggiane Aeronautica SIG over at FSM if we saw someone post a WIP of something Italian we would jump on them and explain to them that they needed to join and post there work there. It usually worked! It was one of our GB rules that you must recruit aggressively and use force if necessary! Smiley Bribery was also employed sometimes too!

In all seriousness I just scored a deal for some 1/72 kits, more than I could ever build...If people are interested in giving it a spin, I will give them the kits for free....

That exactly what I was talking about. We would try and recruit someone and they would say I do'nt have another kit or I am not buying any new kits right now and someone would say give me your address and I'll send you a kit. No excuses! Smiley

If WNW would hurry up and release their 1/32 D.VII and Albatros (they've been listed as "coming soon!" since last summer at least) I would like to build one of those.  I think a WWI kite in 1/32 would be interesting to try.
