Back from the boneyard

I'll bet you thought (or hoped) that you would never see this model again. This is the 1/48 Eduard Nieuport 17 that I tried to build for a GB that ended eons ago. I gave up on the build after I gouged the upper wing with a lit incense stick while trying to take sag out of the rigging. I got tired of looking at the unfinished model, put a "combat damage" patch on the gouge (it could happen), rebuilt a few assemblies, and completed the build. I struggled with every aspect of the build, no doubt due to my striving for perfection while being incompetent. The model is, at best, a three footer in a dark room, but it is a finished model, and it provided an intensive course on how not to build a model.

Thanks Dave, I have a few more coming. I  build as slow as you build fast, but I'm beginning to pick up steam.

Those biplanes are tough. It took me 6 months to build the Eduard 1/48 D VII and it is one of the best kits around. She looks good to me.

Yeah, biplanes definitely call for a different approach. The closer you get to finishing them, the more fragile and difficult to handle they become. I complicated this build by trying out a lot of new paints, glues, aftermarket, and techniques. Some worked, most didn't.

I don't know.  If that's a 3 footer then most of mine are 5 footers.
She looks really fine to me Smiley

I do'nt know about you Rob but as hard of a time I had building mine I am still very glad that I did it. It went painfully slow. Adding rib tape decal one at a time. A tiny cockppit full of photo-etch and the dreaded stacking of wings besides hand painting the dreaded Fokker streaked fuselage and in the end I was very proud of my efforts and I learned may new tecniques too. I bet you did also. I think we shouls all build something out of our comfort zone every once in a while. It really expands you talents.

Your Fokker is a treat to see. I agree with your statement about building outside of your comfort zone to improve skills. I do a lot of moaning about difficulties that I encounter during builds, but I keep building, so it can't be as bad as I make it sound.

Thanks Joe. The base is an inexpensive, unfinished piece that I bought at a craft store (Michaels). I stained it and then sealed it with about a dozen coats of future. I found the map on a WWI website. I printed it onto some fancy, parchment type paper and used a spray adhesive to attach it to the base. The map depicts the 12th Battle of the Isonzo River/Battle of Caporetto. The next time I do this style of base I am going to try decoupage as I had a lot of problems with the map wrinkling and lifting.
