Eduard 1/48 Fokker D VII finished at last!
07/03/09 at 05:02:10

Well I finally finished it. This is the most amount of time I have ever spent on a single engine plane. I had alot of fun building out of my normal subject matter and learned alot of new techniques like painting the streaked camo and mounting the upper wing without destoying the rest of the model. It was also good pratice for useing photo-etch as there is alot of it included in this kit. I have the second kit as this was a dual combo kit but I think I need a bit of a break before I do this agian!

Well done sir!  I've been wanting to do my other one in the near future.  Look for it in the mail when it's time for the lozenge to be applied Grin

Looks great! Love the lozenge pattern. It's always good to try things out of our comfort zones. Makes us better modelers! Good job.  Smiley

Excellent model. Did the lozenge decals give you any problems?

Thanks everyone. I was definetly a challenge to try something that you do not normally model. I learned alot about the history and the techniques needed to model these biplanes. The lozenge decals took me a while to figure out. I studied them for a while almost like a puzzle then once I started applying the decals I all started to fall into place. They Eduard decals were very easy to use and very easy to position and move around to get them lined up. They also responded well to setting solution and set down very nicely. The rib tapes took forever and were very tedious to install but necessary to achive the right look. This kit is a great choice if you want to try and build your firsy biplane. It is very well engineered and a fun build.

Thanks Gary. I think the second one I build should be even nice now that I have some idea of how these crazy things go together!

Thanks Matt. You know what they say the tenth times a charm! Actually I think I repainted the streaked camo at least five times before I actually got it to look like it was suppose to. The only good part was I used oil paints over acrylics to create the streaks so everytime I did not like it I just soaked a paper towel in thinner and wiped it all of. I think I spent at least 5 or 6 hours just trying to get the streaks just right. In the end I have a model with a color scheme few others have done. As soon as I finished painting the streaked camo the new issue of FSM showed up and under the new items was a set of streaked camo decals! I still thing my painted ones look far better than the decal though.

Bravo, sir.  I've seen the decals also and would much rather paint it myself.  It may or may not look better than the decals but the satisfaction factor goes way up.

I  know what you mean Mark. I was very proud of the fact that I was able to do something that required some artistic abilities and I pulled it off! Well after five atempts but I still got it. I gave myself a big pat on the back after I finished Smiley
