Macchi M.5

...
I'm a sucker for any kind of sea plane and this little Macchi floater really caught my eye. This is actually a repop of an older kit, possible the Flashback M.5 with some resin goodies added to upgrade the engine and interior. I started with the engine but failed to dust it off prior to taking the picture.
...
I'm doing the Dragon Head version as seen on the box art. The kit gives decals for this but they are not that great. I will most likely be doing most of the artwork freehand and just use the kit teeth decals. The logo on the side of the plane is incorrect also so a few things to fix but that's where all the fun is anyway.

I just read a review of that kit in the January issue of SAMI magazine. When it comes to lining up the engine nacelle to upper wings to fuselage it sounds like you have your work cut out for you.

I'm using an Aeroclub jig to get everything lined up. A real nice tool for biplanes.

Now that's a cool scheme.  It will be interesting seeing how you get it done.

That is from Aeroclub. You spend a day assembling the thing but once complete it is a real boon when working with Biplanes. It can handle 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 scale models easily. In those shots the model is just resting on it but once I start attaching the wings and installing rigging I'll line the jig up on graph paper to ensure everything is square and set all my angles. I'll post more on that as I get deeper into it.

I've wanted one forever and a day but the availability was always a setback.  I'm not sure how many are on hand now, if any, so you may want in ask Aeroclub in advance.

I can't recall any other distributor for these.

I had ordered mine before he even had them complete so was able to get an early edition. He does continuous updates to the jig to improve its performance but yes, there is a bit of a wait time.

Looking good. Are you using pre-mixed paint or mixing your own  colors? It looks like challenging masking job.

I mixed my own orange/yellow and blended the wood colors. The green and white are Testors colors right from the bottle. The real challenge is still ahead, hand painting the light brown details for the dragon head.

It's been nearly two months since I've worked in this but .... I'm Back! The lower wings are attached and getting the right dihedral was not an easy task. The engine and lower bracing is installed and the Windsock data files are really helpful with this stage of the assembly. I'll be installing rigging in the lower engine bracing before going any further with the wing assembly.
...
I also found a paint that I like for the dragon head artwork. I tried a little Delta Ceramcoat semi-translucent Burnt Sienna and once thinned a little gave a very good reproduction of the original aircraft artwork texture. And where do you find Delta Cermacoat paint you ask, just look in the fabric department of your local Wal Mart.
