May 13, 2006 the IPMS Region 4 model show opened up at Owens Community College in Perrysburg Ohio which is a nice little bedroom community on the South side of Toledo. I had been reserving this date to make the trip for quite some time and was not disappointed. Upon entering the building I was greeted by a wonderful display of models beginning with this amazing 1/48 scale diorama by Robert Kuschel of Don Gentiles P-51. All the vehicles in this display were scratch built and the model itself began life as a Monogram kit. The diorama captures the day after Don Gentile’s last flight and the recovery from his infamous landing at Debden.
A “Make and Take” project room was set up for the kids, Jeff Herne from Fine Scale Modeler Magazine was there taking pictures of contest winners and also held a workshop on writing magazine articles. Several vendors were in attendance including Black Box, Wings n’ Treads – the US distributor for LionMarc tank tracks and several other model shops were present with a huge selection of kits from all disciplines. The contest tables were probably the most impressive feature of the show with many kits that were all exceptionally well done. I did not envy the judges having to decide which ones were best because they were all prize winners in my opinion.
All the models on the tables were contest entries with no names attached so, unfortunately, I cannot give these modelers the individual credit they deserve. There were so many models present that I could not take pictures of everything but did capture as many as I could. Let’s begin with a few shots of the presentation area, these were take with my back to the stage looking first left then right, the vendors were set up in the back third of the room. Setting up for and running a model show of this caliber is no small task but these guys from IPMS Region 4 did a hell of a job and I just want to say thanks to all of them, the modelers who risked transporting their builds and the vendors who set up for a great day. It was rainy outside but the modelers really shined inside this day.

And now from in front of the vendors’ area looking towards the stage. In this shot all those guys studying the models are judges.
